It is important to note that wood is a natural material and is sensitive to the constant changes of the outdoor environment. Although Ipe is naturally stable, minute checks in the wood surface may appear if the furniture is placed in a very dry or sunny environment for prolonged periods. Rest assured that superficial checking, or grain opening, is completely natural and in no way will affect the structural integrity or longevity of your furniture.
Caring for Ipe
To preserve the original Ipe color, we recommend Penofin Verde, a specialized oil finish. It contains a light transparent pigment that screens the UV light and enhances the tone and hue of the Ipe without hiding the beautiful grain patterns. It is simple to apply using a cloth, sponge or spray bottle. In average climates, it is sufficient to recoat fully exposed furniture once per year. More frequent coatings may be needed in regions with stronger UV exposure.
For additional protection from water and moisture we recommend Wood Shield. Applied to Ipe table tops, Wood Shield will provide protection from household stains such as beverages, oils, water rings, etc.
